Hand built bicycle shows are becoming very popular events, with numerous such shows being held across the globe. Bespoked UKHBS, held in Bristol, is the origin of the UK shows – the 2015 edition of which proved to be a turning point for Richard at Evanson Bike Works, based in the Essex town of Colchester in the UK, as he collected the Brooks Choice Award and has since been inundated with orders.

The bike pictured here is an all-road bike designed to survive the UK weather all year round. Richard has built this Evanson using Columbus Spirit tubing with a stainless Columbus XCr rear triangle – which has been left raw, almost as if in defiance to what the UK weather might throw at it. The new Mud Disc fork from Columbus ensures clearance is not an issue.

It runs disc brakes in the form of the cable actuated Spyre model from TRP to ensure solid braking on all surfaces and in all conditions. The disc mount dropouts and other key parts on this frame come from Paragon Machine Works in the US, but Evanson will also work with local producers such as Bentley Components, or make their own if the commission requires it.

To maintain control of the process end-to-end, Richard finishes his Evanson bikes in-house. This one uses three tones of blue in a simple-yet-striking design. These blues are perfectly contrasted by the mango Chris King hubs and headset; which, in turn, are neatly complimented by the orange details in the Paul Comp skewers.

In line with the headset and to ensure perfectly matched colours, the wheels – built by August Bicycles – also use the Chris King mango color disc hubs. The bike is finished with a Brooks Cambium C15 Carved saddle, Deda Superleggero components, and a dependable Shimano 105 drivetrain.

Keep an eye out for future stories from Evanson as Richard is working on a couple of exciting projects – including a set of four ‘Artist Series’ frames and a special commission for UK component manufacturer, Hope.

If you’re at the next edition of Bespoked UKHBS (7th-9th April 2017) be sure to check out the Evanson bikes in person – including Richard’s own ’N-1’ 650B & 700c all-road bike – and speak to Richard if you are keen to commission a new build.
