The current northern hemisphere temperatures aren’t slowing up production of Donhou Bicycles’ award-winning DSS1, or the latest customer, for that matter. This is a DSS1 Plus and it’s heading for Oslo where, at the time of writing, it’s -2°.
The DSS1 is one of the tidiest semi-custom offerings in the UK, so it’s unsurprising that it’s been noticed by overseas customers. In fact, there are so many options regarding sizing, paint, and layout, that it’s as close to a custom steel frame as you can get.
The frame is constructed from Reynolds’ highest-quality 853 Pro Team tubing: a seamless, air-hardened steel tube drawn to deliver a superb ride quality at a minimum weight. It’s an incredibly fatigue and impact resistant frame for a very affordable price.
The TIG-welded frame is married to ENVE’s carbon 2.0 Road Disc and comes with a Chris King Inset 8 headset. It’s available in 54, 56 and 58cm sizes but the crank length, bar width, stem length, and gear ratio is factored into the equation.
Liv, a passionate BMXer, lives in Oslo and came across some glowing reviews of the DSS1, but requested a few modifications, such as the ability to run tires up to 32c — hence, the Plus moniker.
Tom Donhou reckons this is the smallest DSS1 built to date, but that claim undermines it’s stature. Liv’s love for racing 20-inchers called for an alteration to the paint scheme, which Tom accommodated, relocating to the top tube to resemble a BMX pad.
The colors of the fade were tweaked to her personal preference, and it looks as striking as any contemporary graphics. Liv’s DSS1+ may be small on size, but it’s a hugely stylish statement. Oslo must be bracing itself for a good winter shredding.
