While the age-old tradition of bicycle touring comes of age, the debate continues as to whether modern touring bicycles should be referred to as randonneurs, considering the fact that there are differences that define the two disciplines.

In the case of this wonderfully elaborate machine by French artisan builder Alex Singer, as it was designed for both in the country from whence the term originated, let’s leave it with its romantic title.

Alex Singer, along with Rene Herse, is one of the most revered frame builders of the modern age, generating a worldwide cult following and escalating the sale value for collectors.

Singer was born in Budapest in 1905 and moved to France in 1923. After a professional racing career, he devoted himself to touring and manufacturing bicycles. He was joined by Ernest Csuka and together they established Cycles Alex Singer as one of France’s leading frame-building shops, on a reputation for elegant, robust racing, touring and tandem frames with innovative details for their time.

This particular model was discovered on eBay in ‘original’ condition, but you can buy a brand new Alex Singer for around €5-8k. The new models are made by the son of Ernest Csuka, Olivier, at the original Alex Singer premises in Levallois Perret, France.

Their website is in French, but Google Translate is your friend. Thanks to Kaptain Amerika.
