Velo City: Bicycle Culture and City Life

Vertigo Cycles

Oregon’s natives of Portland are a passionate bunch. They’re proud of their culture as a cycle-centric community and are willing to support their extraordinarily high number of artisan frame builders and engineers. Matthew Haughey is one such enthusiastic resident, promoting local and American manufacturers by running Portland’s Buy Local racing team. You may remember his Chris King-built Cielo Sportif, this is his off-road vehicle: a 26″ mountain bike built by Sean Chaney of Vertigo Cycles.

While Sean mainly builds titanium 29ers and cyclocross frames, his 26er for Matt Haughey is constructed with the same exceptional level of craftsmanship. Matt assembled it with a completely made-in-America spec sheet barring the Shimano XTR components — SRAM XX doesn’t allow for a 180mm crank. The fork is a White Brothers LOOP, Corsa Concepts hoops are laced to Chris King hubs (who also supplied the bottom bracket), the bars are Enve Composites with Portland Design Works grips and Thomson provided the stem and seat post.

While I was a bit late posting this up for July 4th, I trust our American readers had a wonderful holiday, and you can see more details of Matt Haughey’s Vertigo on his flickr page. Special thanks to Jared Souney for the fantastic shots.
