Somec MAX Road

Another Italian marque that’s renowned for delightfully over-the-top paint schemes, Somec originated in the 1960s by Giro d’Italia mechanic Oliviero Gallegati and named as the abbreviated Societa Mechanica, an organization formed to maintain a standard amongst local framebuilders.

This pristine example is located in Melbourne, and these photos combine the efforts of three masters of their chosen arts: the build was executed by Andy White and Dan Hale of fyxomatosis and Shifter Bikes, respectively, and the photos were taken by John Watson, the jet-setting editor of The Radavist. It’s assembled to the standard we’ve come to expect from Andy and Dan, and the details have been captured perfectly by John. Interestingly, the Somec Cavallino logo is often confused with that of Ferrari but has the horse’s tail hanging down instead of held upwards, by personal agreement between Oliviero and Enzo Ferrari.

You can see more details of the Somec on John’s flickr stream, and if you have a hankering for an immaculate specimen like it, contact Andy or Dan through the fyxomatosis or Shifter Bikes websites.
