Perth’s Plane Frameworks have been turning out some spectacular products lately, each one perfectly fitted to their customer. The West Australian workshop is certainly spearheading the custom carbon revolution.
Plane specialize in monocoque frame construction, using techniques that allow them to tweak the design to individual specifications and this red road angel is the latest iteration that features several evolutions.
While it might look similar to previous incarnations, this latest frame has entirely new tube shapes and profiles, disc dropouts and stays. The seat post clamp has been reconfigured, as has the internal cable routing.
The bottom bracket area now has extra emphasis, and all of the above refinements have resulted in an even stronger, lighter and stiffer frame than those that have gone before. Under the refreshingly understated paintwork lies an extremely advanced technology.
A Plane frame is borne from a professional fit-test and the geometry is then translated into an extruded polystyrene mould, which is then wrapped with aerospace-grade pre-preg carbon fiber in a tailored layup.
The raw frame is then compressed and cured before being sanded and smoothed in-house. The final result is a flying machine that has been proudly crafted by hand in Australia. The Plane studio is open by appointment — see their website for more details.
