It seems Belgium’s custom motorcycle scene is alive and well, with Fred Bertrand’s ‘Krugger’ shop tackling challenges like BMW’s new K1600 and turning it into an art deco-inspired masterpiece.
But we rarely hear from Belgian custom bicycle frame builders of the same standard, save for a handful of enthusiasts and the superb work of Nicolas Noblet of Noble Cycles.
Nicolas just built himself a luscious new road bike to carry him on adventurous rides around Belgium, which he has named Sugar Candy, referencing the deep red wet paint.
The main prerequisite was a frame that was comfortable to ride from four hours to three days. For that, steel is the ideal recipe, and in this case, Nicolas selected Reynolds 853.
The tubes were brazed together with a set of lugs that Nicolas loved the design of: René Singer Series Lugs by Mr Sachs; ornate, yet functional enough to suit the requirements of the modern builder.
To complement the slender Reynolds tubes, Nicolas opted for a 1″ steel fork with a strong crown. For added usability, braze-ons were added to the fork for lowrider racks. Stainless Gilles Berthoud fenders were painted to match.
The wheels, a combination of Royce hubs, Sapim Race spokes and Pacenti SL23 rims, were built up by Jon from Just Riding Along. The drivetrain is provided by a Campagnolo Chorus group set, while Medium Racer brakes by Paul Components haul everything up.
It’s definitely a keeper, ensuring Nicolas with thousands of miles of supple riding. What do you think? See more on the Noble Cycles website.
