Today, ‘bespoke’ can refer to anything from cars to software, although it’s originally derived from the British tailoring profession. It’s bandied about in the bicycle industry as well, but for The Bike Tailor in Brighton, the definition is a perfect fit.

Stephen Roche is The Bike Tailor, who offers a professional-level bike fit and setup service that includes V02 Max measuring, saddle pressure mapping and, also, exclusive access to the Boardman Performance Centre’s wind tunnel in the Cotswolds.

Stephen’s latest assignment probably won’t require within-run yaw-sweep testing — but it’s a specialist machine nonetheless: a single-speed Mosaic MT-1 built up for an ultra-marathon racer who enjoys “crazy long mountain rides in France and Europe”.

The customer’s previous steel frame had terminally cracked, so he consulted Stephen on its replacement. After a lengthy discussion about frame material and riding regimes, a titanium MT-1 frame by Mosaic Bespoke Bicycles was the logical preference.

The task was to exactly replicate the old bikes’ geometry and lose the gears. Stephen got in touch with Phil at Mosaic who obligingly tweaked the geo to match the old frame and sent it over. It was then built up with a heady mix of HOPE, Chris King, and ENVE parts.

From the initial conversation to delivery took about 10 weeks, with the result being a super-lightweight performance hardtail and an extremely satisfied customer. In fact, he’s just asked Stephen to restore his classic Waterford road bike.
