Velo City: Bicycle Culture and City Life

Portugal has a small cycling culture in comparison to its Spanish and French neighbors: the bicycle population consists mainly of ‘full dressers’ whose design and components haven’t changed since the 50s. But when it comes to viniculture, it’s a long tradition that can be traced back to the height of the Roman empire. Vitor Machado combined both to create the ultimate Portugese porteur.

Vitor Machado studied Product Design before deciding to combine his passion for design with his love for bikes. He created iNBiCLA, an arena for him to assemble bikes according to his own aesthetic. This is his latest, captured at the end of a languid afternoon by photographer Daniel Vidinha. It’s called ‘Crusted’ and is as Portugese as the ruas over which it rolls.

Care was taken to use Portugese components where possible. The frame is a type which has been made in Portugal since the 50s and sports a Tabor saddle and an MIL dynamo light. Vitor made the wooden crate, sisal hand grips and wooden decals himself, to portray his beloved city of Porto as a bicycle. Vitor can customize a similar machine to your own desire, contact him through his website.
