Hutch is an ‘old school’ BMX marque that, due to Richard Hutchin’s innovation, his focus on quality and marketing nous, garnered a cult following.
His Trick Star was one of the first true freestyle frames to appear on the scene during the golden era, and Luis in Sydney has recaptured it here with this immaculate restoration.
Luis went all out on this restoration, respraying the frame and original Hutch forks in a mottled ‘futuristic black’, coupled with a set of Hutch Tuffs wrapped in NOS Comp ST Duro tires. A Hutch stem was sourced, along with a pair of Hutch Ladder bars.
If you know anything about BMX restoration, you’ll know how significant it is to build a Hutch up with their proprietary three-piece cranks and bear-trap pedals. These rare cranks were originally made by Profile, based on their legendary design but with small modifications, such as a more pronounced box section.
The cranks on this Trick Star are replicas, however, manufactured by the now defunct Johnny Chopper. Luis found a Peregrine saddle and a Renthal post to go with it, and set the whole build off with a pair of casino dice drilled to accommodate the valves.
