One theme that is concurrent throughout all bikes on The Spoken is that they have been created by artists. Greg Melms is no exception. An old school BMX racer, he returned to the scene after a long hiatus and answered the need for a satisfactory ride by designing and building his own. For Greg, an urban jump bike was relatively small fry after working on $240,000 cars and $28,000 pieces of furniture. A true aesthete, his design is not only the most modular and refined looking layout we’ve seen, but also looks in it’s element soaring over the hip at the local park.

The seat post clamp and axle pegs are adjusted with a custom wrench that allows the eye to travel over these areas without interruption. With internal cable routing, integrated headset and the placement of the rear Hope caliper inside the rear triangle, this is surely the Helvetica Bold of bicycles.

Greg used streamlined tubing for the forks to maintain the lean lines, but also as a hat-tip to old school JMC bikes. A flush fitting titanium bolt retains the 20mm thru-axle. Other details are evident after close inspection, such as a flush fit stem cap that adjusts from under the fork crown, and a top headset bearing cap that doubles as a stem spacer.

Only an artist in the medium of steel and an engineer of architecture would be capable of designing and building a bike that is as bold on paper as it is in the air. See Greg Melm’s website for more information and a gallery of his architectural masterpieces.
