Tenterden is a small town in Kent that, in the early 17th century, was home to an honourable man by the name of Samuel Hinckley. His son Thomas, as it turns out, was the direct ancestor of Presidents George H. W. Bush and George W. Bush, but we won’t hold that against him.

Thomas’ sister, Susannah, was the direct ancestor of President Barack Obama, which makes Samuel Hinckley the ancestor of three U.S. presidents. Tenterden still sounds like a charming town, with a population of nearly eight thousand, one of them being Shaun Wakefield of Granule Frameworks.

Shaun has recently set up his custom frame building workshop in Tenterden, a practice whose time he shares with his graphic design studio, Puffin Creative. After initially training and working as an engineer, Shaun changed career course to design, a flair for which is evident on this road frame.

It seems he’s now realised the culmination of all his pursuits: the engineering career contributes an appreciation for steel and its construction; his design experience enables him to listen and understand the needs of a client, while a passion for cycling means he knows what makes a great bike.

This road bike is his personal ride: an imposing rig built from Columbus Life tubing with a towering tapered head tube, fronted by a Deda RS tapered fork. The bottom bracket height is lower than standard, delivering a lower centre of gravity and, ergo, better handling.

Shaun didn’t skimp on the finishing kit, specifying a Campagnolo Super Record gruppo and fi’zi:k bars, stem and seat post. Apparently, it rides magnificently and the paint by Fat Creations certainly makes it look the part. A 7.7kg weight is an impressive figure, too.
