William van Beek just completed the restoration of his Gazelle Primeur Special, and it’s a superb example from the Dutch builder. It doesn’t take much to bring them back to a state of grace, as their simplicity is one of their endearing features.
Starting out with a ‘full-dresser’, as it were, William stripped it of all accessories, including rack and skirt guards. A fresh coat of powder reinvigorated the surface, and provided a clean canvas against which to install a suite of Brooks leather – a B232 Team Pro saddle and Plump Leather Grips. A new drivetrain was installed, after an extended debate on whether to convert it to a belt drive or not… the chain won. The traditional dynamo light was re-instated, the hub planted inside the front of a new pair of rims. After the niggles that are part and parcel of bicycle restoration, the result is a true classic guaranteed to bring many more years of pleasurable transportation.
