Deus Ex Machina Fongers

Deus Ex Machina Fongers

Before and After photos always gets me going, especially when the Before shot is of a rusty wreck that no-one else would look at — even shudder at the thought of touching, let alone restoring to showroom quality. The Deus Bali crew have done just that, renovating this 1960s era Fongers to a regal level.

Fongers was a Dutch marque and a steady supplier to the predominantly bicycle riding populace since the early 1890s. They also supplied the Dutch military with bikes, perfecting the commuter, utilitarian style vehicle. Deus Canggu is the Indonesian outpost of Deus Ex Machina, artistes of the custom motorcycle and bicycle. Originating in Sydney, Australia, the Bali crew are housed in the most exotic location, a true Temple Of Enthusiasm. It’s interesting to note that this Fongers was probably one of many brought into Indonesia during the Dutch occupation. They pushed the boat out on this one: the frame is virtually the only original component. Mogil constructed custom leather luggage and a passenger saddle, and the addition of a springer front end will provide extra protection against the ordeal of Bali roads. Quite an immaculate and sympathetic restoration.

Special thanks to Dustin, Tom and everyone at Deus Canggu, keep an eye on their blog for the latest updates on the Bali scene.
