Velo City: Bicycle Culture and City Life

The Right Honourable Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore, has overcome near-insurmountable odds to transform the Harbour City into a relatively bike-friendly city, ignoramus talkback radio disc jockeys and tabloid newspaper editors notwithstanding.

Established in 1975, Clarence Street Cyclery, a family-owned and run shop in the CBD, has transformed itself along with the city, keeping pace with the surging interest in cycling. They’ve even resurrected their in-house Clamont brand, with custom frames by master builder Geoff Scott.

Aussie riders of a certain vintage will fondly recognize the Clamont name, having ridden one in their youth or remembered them from the Australian cyclists at the 1984 LA Olympics. While the ‘everyday’ frames were manufactured offshore, Geoff Scott’s handmade frames were world class.

Geoff had his own brand for a while, ‘Gefsco’, which will also ignite memories of excellent fillet brazing and drilled lugwork with blinding fluorescent paint — which he applied himself. After a hiatus of some years, Clarence Street Cyclery have managed to convince Geoff to come out of retirement.

Clamont is back, offering a full in-house custom frame service by the original master builder. Track, touring, lugged road and the legendary Professional is available. The graphics are updated, but the hi-viz hues remain, now painted by Star Enamel — ironically back in fashion after 20 years.

Follow progress on the Clamont Bicycle Company’s Facebook page, and if you’re in Sydney on Saturday the 22nd March, head to the second Classic Bicycle Show at the Tempe Velodrome tomorrow to meet Geoff Scott and view the new range of Clamont bikes.
