Ringing In A New Dawn: Chater-Lea Grand Tour Cranksets

Chater-Lea Grand Tour Cranksets

Finally, the day we have been looking forward to has dawned: Chater-Lea, the re-launched British component manufacturer of old, have today announced their new Grand Tour cranksets. We here at The Spoken are spellbound.

Let’s ignore the price for the moment and instead admire firstly the quality of the product and, secondly, the courage of the new Chater-Lea brand for resurrecting itself in order to bring these products to market.

While these cranks (and pedals, released about a year ago) may look out of place on a modern ‘gravel grinder’, there are a thousand classically-oriented bikes out there they could appropriately grace — a couple are in my garage.

From the press release: The latest addition to our Grand Tour range, the Grand Tour single cranksets are designed to be both beautiful and resilient, perfect for road or cross 1x use.

Every component including crank arms, chainrings and fixings are proudly made in Britain using the finest materials, including 7050 and 7075 grade aluminium, and 316 stainless steel.

Machined using the latest CNC technology, with the ‘grain’ of the material aligned for maximum strength. The finish on the dust caps and chainring bolts can be either raw steel or PVD-coated for an authentic brass accent and signature look.

All our cranksets are anodised to enhance protection. The Grand Tour single cranksets are available in 40 tooth or 36 tooth options. Images are shown with PVD-coated fixings. Also available in raw steel.

These components aren’t just for a restoration project, they are modern interpretations of classic design and built to withstand the rigours of modern touring and road riding — albeit for a market less concerned for marginal gains than the joy of a beautiful ride.
