Baum Turanti

Baum Turanti

It was only yesterday that I was reminiscing about hearing Darren Baum speak at the first Australian Custom Bicycle Show and being so inspired about the state of the Aussie custom scene.

Then today I came across the titanium Turanti cyclocross bike by Victoria’s Baum Cycles, now proudly represented in the US by Above Category Cycling.

While the Turanti is described as a cyclocross frame, it is perfectly suited for any sort of rough riding and exploring reaches beyond the edge of the asphalt.

This Turanti sports XTR disc brakes and a 44mm head tube, allowing for the wider fork legs that will eliminate chatter, thus making full use of their stopping power and control.

A cool representative of the Californian shop, it stands resplendent in a coat of ‘Above Category Blue’, AC’s corporate colour, laid out in a design that Baum calls GTR Pins and is set off by the matte titanium and red White Industries T-11 hubs — laced to Zipp 303 clinchers.

Shimano’s Dura-Ace drivetrain is well-matched with XTR, it’s off-road cousin, and can be geared down to a 50X34 chainring combination to handle steeper ascents.

Another Victorian is represented by Busyman Bicycles‘ hand-stitched kangaroo leather bar tape. The Turanti’s geometry make it the ideal fire road explorer and comfortable all-day rider.

Special thanks to the Above Category team and especially Matt White and Derek Yarra for the photography. Head to the AC website for more information or better still, drop in to see them at their Sausalito store.
